west coast contact improvisation JAM
Kan Yan
Single Class Teacher
Class Description
Our dancing is shaped by patterns—how we enter, share weight, navigate risk, and resolve uncertainty. This class invites you to make those habits visible and experiment with dancing beyond them. Through solo and duet explorations, dancers will be witnessed in contact, have recurring patterns named, and then return to the dance with the invitation to move without those familiar pathways. By temporarily removing what is habitual, we create space for surprise, responsiveness, and new choices to emerge.

Biography
Kan Yan is a reluctant and occasional teacher of contact improv. He doesn't have any "formal" dance background but has been privileged to attend numerous workshops by brilliant contact teachers for over a decade. He hosted the jam in Austin, TX for several years and taught classes in order to have more people to dance with. His CI interests include being surprised, the animistic imaginal, making sounds, being “handsy”, and trying to be compositional when everyone else is duetting as a covert means of garnering attention.
