Class Description: How to Improvise

This class amplifies the big picture framing for CI. How do we scaffold the sensations and forms of CI into new dance territories? How do we disrupt fluidity and return to it again? What is the arrangement of force, interruption, and one’s individual movement personality within our dancing? This is a class for students who have a full grasp, already, of the mechanics of CI. Within this class I will call on 30 years of my own dance-making experiences to explore composition while improvising.

Jo Kreiter is a San Francisco-based choreographer with a background in political science. Through dance she engages physical innovation and the political conflicts we live within. Her company, Flyaway Productions makes dances that are site specific, off the ground, and politically driven.  Kreiter’s tools include community collaboration, a masterful use of place, an intersectional feminist lens and a body-based push against the constraints of gravity. Recent awards include a Rauschenberg Artist as Activist Fellowship, a National Dance Project Creation Grant, and a Creative Work Fund Award. She has been teaching contact improvisation for 32 years.
